Collection: Lord Katie Collection

After her marriage to Martin Luther in 1525, Katharina von Bora took on the enormous task of managing the vast holdings of the Black Cloister. This was no small feat, as the property included not only living quarters for her family, numerous students who boarded with them, and a steady stream of visitors, but also agricultural lands, livestock, and a brewery.

While it was common for women in 16th-century Germany to brew beer for their own households, Katharina operated her brewery on a significantly larger scale. She was an adept businesswoman who oversaw the entire operation, ensuring a consistent supply of beer for her large and bustling household. Her management skills were such that Martin Luther reportedly nicknamed her "My Lord Katie" and acknowledged her control over domestic affairs. She was known for her early rising, often at 4 a.m., to oversee the various tasks of the estate.
